Introducing the National Breeding Center and improvement of animal production

Animal breeding science, along with the other animal-related sciences, is considered as one of the essential tools for improving the quality and quantity of livestock products, so extensively used by animal husbandry specialists. Improvement of the quality and quantity of livestock products by enhancing the livestock genetic potential along with helping to improve environmental and management conditions are one of the primary goals of the all breeding centers. Therefore, at present, this center relying on its old experiences in breeding projects and utilizing the latest available hardware and software techniques and facilities in the world, implements the breeding projects of purebred cows, cross bred and indigenous cows as well as Sheep, goats and buffalo in the country.

History

Prior to 1950, breeding services were offered only to four the cattle insemination stations located in Tehran and some other provinces by natural insemination of Brown Swiss bulls, Tashteh, Mont billiard, Tarantz and Semintal.

In 1950, the animal husbandry institution was established and artificial insemination activities were offered using the diluted sperm and speculum method.

Over the years of 1654 to 1963, Institute of Breeding studies was established in South Mehrabad. This institute imported eight purebred Brown Swiss bulls and promoting the use of diluted sperm and method of recto-vaginal insemination.

Over the years of 1963 to 1965, producing of frozen semen was performed using dried ice and isopropyl alcohol.

In 1965, the Institute of breeding studies was moved to the current location of the national breeding center, and then continued sperm production with the imported of a number of purebred Holstein bulls.

In 1971, equipment needed for semen. producing by liquid nitrogen and some new methods were imported.

In 1983, Official activity of the registration and recording groups was started.

Over the years of 1983 to 1986, in one hand the pure registered herds were established by importing 1,650 heads of purebred heifers from Canada, and the other hand the serious and extensive activity of registration, recording, statistics and information, training and production was carried out.

In 1986, many breeding centers in the Provinces were established in order to implement and extend the cattle breeding program throughout the country as well as transfer a part of the operations to the other provinces.

Over the years of 1987 to 1993, operation of station for testing of cattle results was started.

Over the years of 1993 to 1995, the station renamed to animal breeding center and the central committee for the cow evaluation along with training of its appraisers at the national level was formed. At the same time, introduction of proved bulls in the country was carried out and the breeding departments specialized for sheep and goat was activated. Also the indigenous, cross bred cows and buffalo exploited and the list of cow hereditary value were offered.

Over the years of 1996 to 1997, a center of dairy cattle testing in order to completing the cattle breeding cycle was opened and exploited. At the same time, the collection of data through computer networks across the country was extended and the center information network was launched.
